While I do feel that everyone should support any cause they want to, no matter how silly, this article does bring up some interesting points. Mainly, how can folks who benefited from their family members committing an illegal act be against the same actions?
Personally, I fall in the camp that if you’re in this country and not breaking any laws then welcome aboard the America train. There are so many stories of folks who’ve grown up from horrible circumstances to do great things.
To advocate a total open border though would be silly. There are folks who would love to cause problems, whether that be start their own criminal enterprises here or to be apart of a terrorist act. We have to have a border set up to monitor each and every person that comes into the country. However, I do feel we can welcome folks in this country who have shown, or are willing to show, that they want to come here to work and contribute society through taxes and what not.
What I would like to see from the Republican party is more acknowledgement of the fact that most “illegal immigrants” are not lazy burdens who take up all of our tax dollars. That is simply not the case. When they can also point to members of their own party who came from illegal immigrant families to become strong members of the party, to be against illegal immigrants in this country is beyond silly. That doesn’t mean you support the drug dealer who isn’t a citizen and ends up in jail. Deport their ass! That doesn’t mean you support the illegal immigrant that kills someone. Deport their ass! What it DOES mean is you support folks who’ve arrived in this country and have worked their butt off to be productive members of their community and who felt this country had more to offer their children than their home country. What is wrong with embracing those people? Instead of keeping the system going as it stands, change it to where these folks can actually be what they want to be. Good, honest, American citizens.

Hi! Love your write up! I believe that if you came to the US to better yourself and your family, that is great, however, I believe you should become a citizen legally and that would make our country even greater! I too, like almost everyone in the US, come from immigrant background. Like so many in our country and as an America citizen, I am tired of seeing our hard earned money go to those who refuse to help themselves and take advantage of our freedoms, only to be a burden to us all. The immigration laws should not, necessarily bend to let all willy nilly, but be reformed to let those who have worked hard, paid taxes, who have never have broken the laws of the land and who have been here for more than ten years, be provided a pathway to citizenship. An expedited process for those with a history here in the United States with such criteria would be a great move forward. I also believe that the Federal Government should do it’s job and take care of the border issues, like those in my state, Arizona. When border patrolmen, innocent citizens are killed for trying to protect their life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it is both fundamentally wrong and idiotic for the Federal Government to sue states, like ours, for trying to protect ourselves.Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It is refreshing to know that there are Latinos that feel the same way in many respects! Deb
